The annual Tomato Festival is a beloved summer activity in Crystal Springs, MS, which is David's hometown. It takes place the last weekend in June. Everyone happily decorates their yards, houses, and businesses with all things red. Tomato themed flags are all over town. The only complaint you might hear from the locals is about the heat. It is always blazing hot that weekend!
During the two day event, there is a tomato queen contest, a Friday night street dance, fireworks, a 5K run/ fun walk, a kiddie parade, an art show, a car show, local vendors, some amazing food, and more.
Giant tomato art like this one is scattered throughout the town.
walking to the Tomato Festival
On Friday night our boys were at a sleepover and the Brown's daughter was at a church camp, so that gave us the night off to be together. We made the short walk into the center of town and enjoyed the evening.
The thing I love most about the Tomato Festival is that you see everybody! It is a great place for us to go and see people that we probably will not see again while we are home. It is like a reunion of sorts.

We ate supper at Brando's Steakhouse and Buffet and then enjoyed the fireworks before walking back home.
Tomato Festival fireworks show
We picked the boys up from their sleepover on Saturday morning and then headed into town with them to walk around. Saturday is when the booths and food vendors are open. It is also the 5K, kiddie parade, and car show.
We always enjoy the car show.
This year I was a little sad though because it reminded me greatly of my dad. He loved old cars!! Many years he participated in this car show and others. It was just another small reminder that he is no longer here.
We ended the day with a stop at the Dairy Freeze for ice cream and snow cones. It is a landmark in Crystal Springs and has been serving smiles to families for many generations. It is another place I am glad our boys get to know and love.
