After our fun New Year's Eve in Guatemala City, we got to bed around 1:30 a.m. We had to be checked out of our Airbnb by 10:00 a.m. on New Year's Day. We had a guest arriving at the airport but her flight did not land until 12:30. Most everything in the city was closed until around noon. We ended up driving to Miraflores Mall and just walked around. With the exception of a few food vendors in the food court, everything else was closed. It was like a ghost town in there. We made a stop by the outdoor park just to sit and enjoy the sunshine while we passed the time.
Miraflores Mall in Guatemala City
This is the same mall where the boys had rented scooters just a little over a week earlier.
We picked Terrie up from the airport and drove to TGI Friday's for lunch. She will be spending the next eight weeks here serving as a volunteer.
We returned home to Antigua and got Terrie checked in to her housing. We then spent the rest of the afternoon and evening showing her around our beautiful town. The Catholic church on the park square was having a celebration late that afternoon. We stopped to watch.
They shot a lot of firecrackers!!
A processional that led into the church.
the band that followed the processional
The ending fireworks display.
Before ending the night we stopped at La Fonda de la Calle Real for a tamale supper.
We crawled into bed extremely tired. No rest for the weary though. We started back to school at 8:00 a.m. the next morning, January 2.
