Homeschool Curriculum Choices for 5th and 7th Grade (2022-2023)

Here are my homeschool curriculum choices for the 2022- 2023 school year.  The boys are in 5th and 7th grade.

We had taken a break from Sonlight the past two years for various reasons but started back this school year.  I have always loved Sonlight and I am glad to be using it again.  This year we are doing a one year condensed intro to American history.  This curriculum covers History, Bible, and Literature.

We have used Math U See since kindergarten.  This year Ben is doing Epsilon and Cruz is in Pre-Algebra. Cruz will also be doing a weekly online class for extra reinforcement and review.

I started them both in Fix It! Grammar when they began fourth grade.  This year Ben is doing Level 2 and Cruz is doing Level 4.  It is a great compliment to their IEW writing classes.

This year for IEW, Ben is doing All Things Fun & Fascinating and Cruz is doing Medieval History based writing lessons.  This is another curriculum we started in fourth grade.  They will each have a weekly online class and then I will assist them with their keyword outlines, rough drafts, and final papers.

For the first time we will be doing separate Science courses.  I have always combined them in years past but now that Cruz is in 7th grade he will have his own Science level going forward.  This year he will be doing Apologia General Science as an online self-paced course.  I let Ben choose the Apologia topic that he wanted to study and he chose swimming creatures.  Apologia's Young Explorers series is excellent and has wonderful options to choose from.   This is our fourth year using Apologia and I cannot recommend it enough.

I love these 180 days of... books and have used them for many years.  These are the ones Ben will use this year.

Cruz will use this book for extra reading comprehension practice.

We used Keyboarding Without Tears for many years but this year we started a new typing curriculum by The Good and the Beautiful.    They will also get extra practice when they type their weekly final papers for IEW.

We also switched cursive handwriting curriculum this year. Since kindergarten we have used A Reason For Handwriting but this year chose the handwriting curriculum by The Good and the Beautiful.  We are just getting started with it but so far I love the difference.  Ben is doing Level 5 and Cruz is doing Level 7.

They will continue to participate in afternoon extracurricular activities at Encounter Academy.  They will go two afternoons a week and do art, P.E., and Awana.  They will also get to participate in quarterly field trips.  Having this option is a great compliment to our school year.

We look forward to learning and growing together over the next several months.
