We recently finished up the first semester of 6th and 4th grade. I did not take many photos those last two months, but here is a look at a little of what we did.
We added Bible drills to our morning routine and the boys have thoroughly enjoyed it. We have focused on learning the books of the Old Testament this semester. I would call out a book or a verse and they would race to find it. They are very competitive with each other so that made it interesting. Here is Ben reading a verse he had found.
We studied the life and ministry of George Muller and Nate Saint. We are using this To Every Nation curriculum and absolutely love it! We listen to a chapter a day in our Bible class. It has been a highlight of our school year so far.
Another favorite thing was a Christmas activity we did this year. I found the idea for a Names of Jesus Advent Countdown from The Unlikely Homeschool blog. I did ours a little different from the way the blog recommended but it was still just as meaningful. I cut circles from construction paper and wrote a name and verse on each one. We had 24 in all. We started on December 1 and went through Christmas Eve. Each day in Bible class the boys would take turns drawing one out of a paper sack, reading the verse, and adding it to our tree. We only had two ornaments for our tree this year so this was a great way to decorate the tree with very little cost. We also did our normal paper chain for the tree. By the end of the month our tree was beautiful and covered with names of Jesus and scripture. It was loved by everyone who visited our home. This is definitely something we will do again in the years ahead.
Cruz likes math but it is not a subject that comes easy for him. We spent a lot of extra time towards the end of the semester reviewing and practicing for his semester exam. He did well and we all breathed a sigh of relief going into the Christmas holidays.
Cruz read these two chapter books.
Doing a book report.
Ben finished the Ralph Mouse series and loved all three books in the series. Next, he began the Henry Huggins series. Reading is his favorite subject.
Ben doing a daily reading lesson from his 180 Days of Reading for Fourth Grade.
Ben began an IEW writing class this year. Towards the end of the semester he asked to type his final paper instead of writing it. I welcomed the extra typing practice.
At the end of the semester he received a Certificate of Completion for Part 1 of the class.
The boys working on a Science notebook assignment.
Ben reading a Science lesson.
And just like that, we were done!!!
We are enjoying our Christmas break although it seems to be passing by quickly. We will start Semester 2 next week.
