On Tuesday, the 27th, we celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary. Our aniversary has always been our most favorite, and most celebrated day of the year. We always look forward to it and try to celebrate it in great ways.
We don't give gifts or cards. Instead we usually take a vacation and travel. In the past we have planned some great trips for our anniversary. For the past three years while in Guatemala we have visited the Pacific coast beach. We had made that our tradition here, but this year it was not possible for me to go. I didn't mind considering we just went to the beach with family before leaving the States. Regardless of where we have been, we always have celebrated big and were thankful for another year together!
This year was a most special one for us because it was our last anniversary to celebrate "just the two of us". That makes us happy and sad (but not in a bad way). You see, we have LOVED our life as a family of two. We've been able to go, see, and do more than most couples will in their whole married lives. We've always been content with where we were in life and with the fact that the Lord had not given us children. Did we want children, yes. But, instead of dwelling on the fact that we didn't have them, we instead chose to continue to be happy, serve the Lord, and wait for His perfect timing in our lives. Was it hard, yes. We were happy in the fact that we were always surrounded by other people's children whether that be through children's ministry, youth ministry, teaching preschool kindergarden, going to school events, babysitting, etc. The void in our lives was always filled with other's children. We are thankful to all the parents who entrusted us with their kids for all those years. We have felt like parents all along.
We didn't think it would take 14 years to have our own children but we are happy in the fact that we waited on the Lord to give us one. We never felt the Lord leading us to do anything but wait. So, wait we did. I feel sure that if He had never given us a child that we would have been happy to trust His will for our lives. But, we can't say enough how happy we are that he did. We can't imagine how much joy this child is going to bring into our lives and we count it a special honor to be his parents. I know the days ahead are going to bring about much change and at times be very hard but we look forward to it with much anticipation. We've had a great life enjoying all of our years together, and are now looking forward to life with a child. If given the chance to change, I don't think we would change a thing!
"For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
With all that said, this year we chose to celebrate on a low scale. We enjoyed just spending the day together, just the two of us. We had class in the morning, and did homework and rested in the afternoon. We went out to eat for dinner at a local restaurant in Antigua. We ate on the rooftop terrace and had a wonderful meal.
David gave me a dozen pink roses (which I LOVE).
They look beautiful on our table!
So for those of you who prayed for us on our anniversary, THANKS. We had a great day. We don't know where we'll be next year or how we'll celebrate but we sure are looking forward to it- just the three of us.
Happy belated anniversary!
