We are finishing our first month of school today. So far it has been a very smooth transition back into our routine. We begin at 8:00 with the Pledge of Allegiance. We then sing a patriotic song and a few Bible songs. This year they are learning the books of the Old Testament. We practice reciting them each morning.
ready for school
We are doing a missionary study this school year. We will spend three weeks on each missionary. We will not only learn about their life, call, and service, but also the countries where they served. Each missionary lesson provides a character trait study, a Bible memory verse, and note
booking pages to log what they have learned. So far we have studied the life of Hudson Taylor and learned what it means to live a life of endurance.
Ben working a Fix It! Grammar lesson.
Daily spelling practice.
They both take a spelling test each Friday.
Once they finish a chapter book they do a short report on it.
This year we are doing Mississippi History. I hope to incorporate some field trips into our lessons since we will be in the States this first semester.
I checked out these books from the library to help introduce our study. So far we have learned about the border states, the five rivers and three bays, land regions, and many interesting facts. We watched several YouTube videos about the Mississippi River. I think it is going to be a great study!
We are using this art book from the library to draw the State symbols. So far they have drawn the map of Mississippi and the State Seal.
For Science we are doing Earth Science by Apologia.
We began the course with a study of the universe. We made putty to demonstrate how the universe is expanding.
We made a galaxy mobile using chenille sticks and wire hangers. We learned the different galaxy shapes.
We currently have these hanging over our school table.
Cruz doing a notebook activity to review vocabulary words.
We learned about the solar system and did an activity to demonstrate the Goldilocks Zone.
Ben working a crossword puzzle with Science vocabulary words.
Lastly, we began a study on the earth's spheres. Our final experiment for the month was building a geosphere. We used a large white balloon, cut up pieces of white tissue paper, and glue.
We glued the paper pieces to the balloon to form the earth's surface.
We do a lot of science experiments and I will have to say that this one was by far the messiest of all.
All done!
We will use this throughout the school year to create a complete globe.
We joined a local homeschool group for fun and fellowship activities. We were a part of this group during our last Stateside Assignment back in 2017 and it was a highlight of our semester. They plan field trips and outings for the homeschool families to participate together. We are excited about our time with them again. We recently did our first field trip of the school year to a local plant nursery. We had a complete tour of the facility, potted a plant, and had a picnic lunch afterwards. It was fun and educational.
We are off to a great start!
