Last week we celebrated Guatemala's Independence Day. It was the quietest one we have ever experienced. Due to the virus there were no torch runs, parades, or bands marching and playing. It was sad for us but I really felt bad for the locals who I know were missing their normal activities. It was a quiet, calm day and nothing like years past. Here is what we did to celebrate.
The holiday fell on a Tuesday this year. We went into town the Sunday before to walk around. We enjoyed lunch at San Martin and then delicious flag colored donuts from Dunkin' Donuts.Ben with his doughnut. We sat in Antigua's Central Park and ate them while people watching.
A beautiful, sunny day in Antigua.
We began the actual holiday morning with eggs and black beans.
We then did a full, regular day of school. The boys were not excited about it but we had nothing else to do.
We took a few pictures before lunch.

For supper I made a pot of black beans and some rice. Both are traditional foods here. We also enjoyed our flag themed jello jigglers. These are made with blue jello and whipped cream. They are so simple and cute. We love making them every year.
Our celebration this year was different but we still made some fun memories. We love Guatemala not only because we serve here but it is where both of our boys were born. We want them to love it too and have fond memories of us celebrating it each year.
