Cruz the Baptist
I found this post that I typed back in April and realized I never posted it. I was going to do a follow-up post today, but instead I'll just share the whole story. We have a place in Flores that we have stayed at several times this year. The people there know us and seem excited when we visit. They love the baby and always want to hold him and play with him. Back in April while eating breakfast at their restaurant one of the waitresses came out to see the baby. She asked us is he baptist referring to Cruz. I said yes, assuming she meant his denomination. We then noticed as she returned many times to our table that she kept referring to Cruz as bautista (baptist). We caught on that she thought his name was bautista. I guess she had got confused when we told here we were baptist missionaries on a previous visit. David said not to correct her but I couldn't help but tell her his correct name. When I told her that yes, he is baptist, but his name was Cruz she laughed and went into the kitchen and told the other ladies that "they changed his name, his name is now Cruz". We have laughed about that a lot. It was as if in that moment we decided that we no longer wanted to call him bautista but Cruz. Well today we returned to that hotel to check in because we are staying the night with our mission team. When she saw us checking in she ran and said "Jesus, Jesus". She then looked at me and said, "his name is Jesus, right?" I said no his name is Cruz! I am not sure if we will ever get her straightened out, haha. Oh the joys of living in another culture and language. :-)
