We spent our first six months in Guatemala living in the town of
Antigua. We think it is one of the most beautiful towns here. It is where we studied Spanish. While there we lived with two Guatemalan host families, but we will write about that in another post. When we arrived we could not tell you our names, where we were from, or anything else in Spanish. Day 1 of class was very basic, preschool like. We've come a long ways since those early days, but we still have a long way to go.
We studied at
APPE Spanish Language School . We loved our school and teachers. This is a photo of the outside of our school.
They had an open courtyard where classes were held. We studied for 4 hours a day, five days a week, for six months.
The school kitchen. They supplied coffee and hot tea everyday.
We changed teachers every month. We loved getting to know them and learning about their lives. We became good friends with many of them and always love returning and visiting.

This is a photo of the school administrators. Everyone there was very warm and friendly to us!
Each month the school would have a birthday party for the students celebrating that month. They provided cake for everyone. We would sing "Happy Birthday" in the national language of each one celebrating. These next photos were taken during the February party for my birthday.
We "graduated" on June 29, 2007. I cried most of that last week because I was soo sad to leave everyone. We were ready to finish and move to Coban and get to work but I hated leaving our life there. It was an amazing 6 months for us. We loved every minute of it!
