Last Sunday morning the team attended church services at Templo Evangelico Bautista Belen K'ekchi' (Bethlehem Baptist Church) in Coban. This is a large K'ekchi' church right around the block from our apartment. From time to time we like to go to services there (mostly because it is close and we can walk). Our helper, Sergio, and his family attend this church, Jim's helper, Juan, and his family attend this church, and my new K'ekchi' tutor, Chus, is the pastor's wife. It is nice to go and feel like you know someone.
The K'ekchi' have a hymn book in their language. Several of the songs we sing we recognize from hymns back home. Even though we do not always know what they are saying we can sing along in English to the tune. This past Sunday they sang several familiar hymns. One of them was to the tune of "How Great Thou Art". It was very beautiful to sing along and praise the Lord even in another lanugage. I have tried several times to post a video I took of them singing the chorus but have not had good success. I finally just posted it to you tube and it is available for you to watch (on the right). Below is a photo of the hymn book page with the words in K'ekchi'. In the video there is Bro. Juan leading the music. He works in the K'ekchi' Association Office. Three of his sons are playing instruments. One on the drums, and two playing guitars. One is Sergio, David's tutor (in the yellow shirt).
Here are a few more photos from the service:
