Traditional Mayan Dress

"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." Colossians 3:12

There are 23 different Mayan people groups living in Guatemala. Each have their own dress, language, and culture. It has been interesting to learn about the different groups and to compare their likes and differences. For the most part, each group is very unique and different in their own way. Last week, the hotel we stayed at for our annual meeting had a display of several different indigenous dress from the different regions of Guatemala. It was a beautiful display and I took a few photos to share with you a sample of what some of the people here wear.

In some parts of Guatemala the men still dress in typical clothing. The K'ekchi' men, however, do not. They mostly wear slacks and oxford shirts. It is funny to see men today dressed in clothing like below. I love to see them wearing these brightly colored pants.

Below was the display for the K'ekchi' women. The long ribbons hanging down would be what they would braid in their hair. Here is a photo of Regina wearing typical K'ekchi' clothing. The skirts are very heavy and hot. It is hard to believe that these women wear these everyday.

Our Coban apartment

"And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

This is where we live. We have a 2 room apartment in the side yard of our supervisor. It is not very big but is sufficient for the two of us. We have grown quite attached to it and have really made it our home. We did a lot of painting when we moved in and feel that all of the color gives it a happy feeling.

One room is our living room/ dining room/ kitchen. It is all one big room. There is a small bathroom attached to this room. You can see the corner of the sink at the right of this photo. It's weird to have a sink in the middle of your living room. We like to make a lot of jokes about that.

The other room is our bedroom. We also consider this room our office since our desk and computer are in here.

As you can see, it's not much but we are very proud to have it. When we consider what most of our people group live in, we feel as though we live in a mansion. It sure puts things into perspective.

We are thankful to Southern Baptists for their faithful giving that allows us to be provided a place to live. We appreciate you more than you know.

Bienvenidos!!! (welcome)

Thanks for visiting our blog. We hope you will check in often to see what we have been up to and how things are going. We will continue to send out our regular updates but just wanted a space to share with you some of the things that get omitted from it due to space. We will also be able to post more photos here for you to enjoy.

We covet your prayers and look forward to sharing with you more about our life here in Guatemala.
