After driving four hours from Cortez, CO that morning, our last national park visit for this trip was Great Sand Dunes. We arrived around 11:00 that morning and got in line with several others who were visiting that day. It was Memorial Day weekend and one of the park's busiest weekends of the year. We probably waited in line around an hour to get in and find a parking spot. The lots were full and most people were having to park along the road and walk in. It was definitely the busiest park of the whole trip due to the holiday.

We could see the dunes in the distance as we drove in.
We ended up eating our picnic lunch in the car as we waited in line.
Once there we made our first stop at the visitor's center for a badge and pin.

We walked from the visitor's center to the dunes because the main parking lot was completely full.

There is a creek you have to cross to get to the dunes. Lucky for us the water was very low so our feet did not get very wet. Ben loved playing in the small amount of water that was there. Overall, we spent around three hours there exploring the dunes.

Our original plan was to stay overnight in Alamosa but instead we decided to push on and try to get closer to Colorado Springs. We drove two hours and stopped for the night in Pueblo. We had a delicious Chick-fil-A supper there and then were eager to get to bed. It had been another long travel day.
Next up, Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.
